{"id":610,"date":"2017-03-10T22:02:19","date_gmt":"2017-03-11T05:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2017.calgary.wordcamp.org\/?p=610"},"modified":"2017-03-10T22:04:08","modified_gmt":"2017-03-11T05:04:08","slug":"want-to-speak-but-not-sure-what-to-talk-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calgary.wordcamp.org\/2017\/want-to-speak-but-not-sure-what-to-talk-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Want to Speak, But Not Sure What to Talk About?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is an old saying\u00a0that\u00a0more people fear public speaking, than they fear <strong>death<\/strong>. \u00a0So for those folks, I suppose\u00a0the classic nightmare\u00a0where you&#8217;re\u00a0speaking naked in front of a classroom of your high school peers would be pretty traumatic&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, speaking at WordCamp Calgary is a much different experience. First, we let you keep your clothes on&#8230; in fact we insist. Also, the lunch is a lot better and your peers aren&#8217;t jerks!<\/p>\n<p>Even still, people tell us that they are nervous about speaking at WordCamp. They&#8217;re worried that they might choose a topic that nobody will come to.<\/p>\n<p>So, the good news is that we actually know what\u00a0the burning questions inside our local WordPress community are.<\/p>\n<p>For a little insight into what our community wants to know, we turned to our trusty photographer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/photos\/regtiangha\/17410164834\/in\/album-72157653288463376\/\">Reg Tiangha&#8217;s Flickr<\/a> account for clues&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For several years now, we have had our &#8220;Wall of Questions&#8221; return in one form or another at WordCamp YYC. \u00a0It was a chance to post anonymous sticky notes under such provocative\u00a0banners as&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you hate about WordPress?<\/li>\n<li>What do you want to know about WordPress?<\/li>\n<li>When will WordPress become self-aware and democratize robot slavery?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-612\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2017.calgary.wordcamp.org\/files\/2017\/03\/17410164834_3d140106fd_z-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calgary.wordcamp.org\/2017\/files\/2017\/03\/17410164834_3d140106fd_z.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calgary.wordcamp.org\/2017\/files\/2017\/03\/17410164834_3d140106fd_z.jpg?resize=450%2C300&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calgary.wordcamp.org\/2017\/files\/2017\/03\/17410164834_3d140106fd_z.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what our community of WordPress users are asking&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How do you create <em>and use<\/em> a child theme?<\/strong><br \/>\nTell us what your\u00a0best practices are for managing your theme and functions changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do you\u00a0run WordPress on a local machine and push it to a\u00a0host?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere&#8217;s more options than ever \u2013 tell us how you chose your favourite way to work locally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do you start learning JavaScript \u2013 what language, and how does it relate\u00a0to WordPress?<\/strong><br \/>\nMatt Mullenweg wants us to learn JavaScript bigly&#8230; I mean deeply. \u00a0So, what does that really mean?<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do you manage recurring memberships with WordPress?<\/strong><br \/>\nCan it be done with API&#8217;s, and CPT&#8217;s. If you know WTF that means, that could be a good talk too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Can you send a newsletter with WordPress?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nIs this a great idea, or a ticking time bomb? I don&#8217;t know!
